Films

Here are a list of films that are about Cultural Diversity Issues.

Crash is a very powerful movie dealing with diversity issues in a very real manner. It's a great movie for beginning discussions, especially discussions examining your own prejudices. Highly recommended.
American History X is another powerful movie. It deals with issues of transformation and also deals with racial identity development.
Higher Learning also deals with issues of racial identity development and racism.
Monster's Ball is set in the South and approaches a variety of racial issues, including the racism and interracial relationships. The acting is also extremely good.
Hotel Rwanda is as good of a movie as I have ever seen. It's well written, superbly acted, and does an incredible job at dealing with the issues. The movie is about the genocide which occurred in Rwanda and the world's reaction.
Sometimes in April has many similarities to Hotel Rwanda, also dealing with the genocide in Rwanda. It provides some different information and viewpoints.
The Crying Game is a movie which is quite thought provoking and deals with a variety of diversity issues.
North Country is based upon a true story relevant to the first class action sexual harassment law suit in US history. It does an excellent job of creating a visceral feel for the experience of the women. It is well acted and did a good job of dealing with many issues related to sexual harassment and sexual discrimination.
Remember the Titans tells the story of a football coach who uses sports to help his players work through racial conflicts.
The Joy Luck Club also focuses on Asian culture and acculturation issues.
Amistad is a great movie dealing with the slave trade.
Added December 2005
The Color Purple has many layers of historical importance. The movie is based upon the novel by Alice Walker, who is considered the founder of the womanist movement. It has many important actors including Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, and Whoopi Goldberg. The movie deals with racism in South.
Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored is another important historical movie dealing with racism.
House of Sand and Fog deal with cross cultural issues. The acting is again extremely good.
John Q Delas with diversity issues and adds in the socioeconomic component quite well.
In the Flies of Butterflies is a historical movie set in the Dominican Republic. Deals more with culture than diversity issues.
Bend it Like Beckham is an especially good movie for dealing with cultural issues with youth.
Barbershop is a comedy that does a good job as still dealing with diversity issues and other sociocultural issues. Don't let the genre fool you!
Barbershop 2 is the sequel to Barbershop. While not as good as the original, it's still worth watching.
Boyz in the Hood is a classic movie. It's easy not to recognize the importance today as there have been many movies which have addressed this and similar issues since. However, Boyz in the Hood led the way. It also brought Ice Cube into an important role. You'll notice many movies on this page have Ice Cube as an actor and for good reason. He's an outstanding actor that has been in many important movies dealing with diversity issues. It deserves a viewing.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is also a classic movie for dealing with diversity issues. It's an older movie, but still relevant. Deals with interracial relationships and family relations.
Guess Who is a more contemporary version of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. It's more of a comedy, but still can stimulate some thoughts about about diversity issues and interracial relationships.
