Final Project and Grading Rubric

Cultural Diversity and Travel

A local Sheikh is concerned that Emirati young people are becoming educated but have no real experience of the wider world.

He is concerned that they might be portrayed as ethnocentric as the Americans in this map.

He has proposed that students should be given the opportunity to widen their horizons by spending a year abroad. Students must spend at least one month volunteering and one month travelling on a low budget in a country of (Dhs100 a day) in SE Asia.

The Sheikh is going to pay for their flights to SE Asia. However, students must pay for their daily expenses while they are there. They must also organize a fundraising event so that they can give a large donation to the place where they volunteer.

You may choose from the following:-

·        Burma

·        Thailand

·        Malaysia

·        Kashmir

·        Vietnam

·        Nepal

·        Sri Lanka

·        Tibet

·        The Philippines

·        Papua New Guinea

Each team who wants to participate in this wonderful opportunity  must write a report and give a presentation including the following:-

An introduction which includes:-

·         The advantages of travel

·         The rational for taking a gap year

·         The benefits of volunteering

A description of the Asian country which they are visiting which includes:-

·         A map and an itinerary of their travel plans

·         An understanding of the country including ancient and modern history, demographic details

·         The cultural diversity of the country (religions present, different ethnicities present, etc.)

·         The relevant cultural aspects: language, food, traditional dress, holidays, celebrations and or ceremonial traditions etc.

A real understanding of the ethnic divisions and problems in the country today including specific examples of:-

·         Race

·         Ethnicity

·         Language

·         Religion

·         Value and belief systems

·         Disability

·         Class

·         Gender

·         Age

·         Educational background

·         The number of deaths caused by ethnic conflict in the last 50 years

Description of the place where you would like to volunteer including:-

·        What skills you think you might be able to offer

·        An awareness of the social etiquette that you must adhere to if you are not going to upset people

·        An idea regarding how your team will raise the money for a big donation

A conclusion which includes:-

·        The advantages and challenges of cultural diversity

·        What do you think is the best solution for overcoming discrimination, conflicts and wars?

·        Do you think learning about Cultural Diversity might lessen conflicts?

·        How do you think you would benefit from taking a gap year?

Although this is a team effort, individuals who obviously are not well informed on all parts of the presentation will receive lower marks.
