Parents of special-needs kids push for more acceptance

DUBAI // The challenges of raising a child with disabilities in the Emirates came into focus this week after police said they were looking for a way to file a legal case against parents who had abandoned their six-month-old baby in a Dubai hospital. The parents did so after learning that the boy suffered from epilepsy and neurological disorders

UAE's Tawam Hospital opens Down syndrome clinic

Al Ain: In association with Johns Hopkins Medical, Tawam Hospital has inaugurated a new specialiswed clinic for infants and children diagnosed with Down’s syndrome.

According to the World Health Organisation, Down syndrome is present in one out of about 1,000 live births.

In the US alone, about 6,000 babies a year are born with the chromosomal abnormality, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, amounting to about one in every 700 births.

A 2007 study looking at more than 63,000 newborns in Dubai, between 1999 and 2003, estimated the incidence to be one in every 449 live births. Among Emiratis, this rate increased to one in 319.

How many people with disabilities do you know?

Really think about it. Some disabilities are not really known or talked about much in the UAE.

When I came to the UAE 15 years ago, my students told me that Emiratis never had depression but if they did would go to the Mutawa.  Now there is a counselor at ADMC. Why do people talk about diabetes but not about depression?

Things are changing in the UAE. Now there are more facilities for people with special needs and people’s attitudes are changing. More young people have a chance to meet their full potential

What is the most important thing for changing people’s attitudes?
