Sun 9th - Thurs 13th Dec

Hi Everyone

As I expect you all know by now. I went home to England for a short holiday to see my family but my father who is ninety-four was rushed to hospital. We have now brought him home to die as the hospital can do no more. Therefore, I will not be in class next week.

You are very lucky because we had completed all the classwork on time and you now just have to prepare for the presentation.

Steve Alison, the supervisor of Cultural Diversity knows everything about the deadlines for your coursework and presentations. He will be looking at your hardcopy PowerPoint presentations. So please have them in the box by Sunday.

You must come to class next week on time with a charged laptop as Steve Allison will be coming around to do the course evaluations. Remember what I said to you - sometimes the things that you think are hard, actually turn out to be the best for you in the end!

Steve will also be organising a timetable for the presentations. You all must be on time for your presentations with everything completely ready. Every team member must speak for at least five minutes.

As I will not see you before the break, I hope that you have a lovely holiday and return refreshed to start the new semester.

Warm regards

Frankie

Classes this week

Hi Everyone

Good news! You do not need to come to class this week.

However, you must get together in your team and produce the powerpoint that you will use in your final presentation.

  • The first slide of the PowerPoint must have all the names, IDs and photos of the team members.
  • The second slide must be the contents page and list what you are going to cover in the presentation
  • The report for the powerpoint presentation (PowerPoint notes) must include the name of the person who is presenting that part of the presentation and a summary of what the student is going to say.

Please remember that although it is a team effort and all members must know about the whole presentation, students who do not perform well will get a lower mark.

A hardcopy of the PowerPoint presentation and notes must be in the box on my desk by Sunday 9th December.

Good Luck

Frankie

What Barrack Obama said in Burma

His strongest comments were about the Muslim Rohingya minority, whose treatment he compared to the racism that once held back African-Americans like himself.

"What we've learned in the United States is that there are certain principles that are universal - that apply to everybody, no matter what you look like, no matter where you come from," Mr Obama said.

"No matter what religion you practise. The right of people to live without the threat that their families may be harmed or their homes may be burned simply because of who they are."

Already Rakhine Buddhist politicians, who have been backing campaigns to drive the Rohingyas out of Burma, have expressed their disappointment with the speech.

Reflection 1

What have you learnt in Cultural diversity so far? How this knowledge can affect your professional life. How this knowledge will affect the way you bring up your children. What is needed to get a good grade in this class? How important is the glossary and learning new vocabulary? Your team has made a film and a PowerPoint. What have you learnt about team work? Has your team performed as well as it could have? How could it be improved?

Reflection 2

What are the Challenges and Benefits of Cultural Diversity?

You may use Understanding Cultural Diversity in today’s Complex World (Chapter 5). I have put the review of this chapter on a PowerPoint on my blog - Title - Chapter 5 PowerPoint.

Based on the outcome of the class discussion, write a Reflective Essay of 250-300 words. In your essay, you should:

·         Introduce the topic of Cultural Diversity (briefly)

·         Describe the Challenges (negative aspects, or disadvantages) of Cultural Diversity, giving examples from your own experience.

·         Describe the Benefits (positive aspects, or advantages) of Cultural Diversity, giving examples from your own experience

·         Give your opinions and recommendations in your conclusion

Reflection 3

As you watch the film, answer the questions and write down any examples of different cultural dimensions. Discuss this with your team. This will help you write a good reflection.

The reflection has to be written in your next class – revise from the notes on the blog.

Reflection 5

The Benefits of taking the Cultural Diversity Course

This form will help you formulate your ideas regarding your opinions about the Cultural Diversity Course. It will help you focus on what you enjoyed doing the most and what you have learnt. Remember sometimes the most difficult things to learn are the most beneficial to your life and often we learn from our mistakes! Making a mistake is fine as long as we learn from them and do not keep repeating the mistake.

You must write an essay – not just fill in this form.
